"Benford's Law or Why Russians Don't "Want to Live"

Recently, the Ukrainian project "I Want to Live" posted photos of a document with Russian losses for the first 8 months of 2025. It turned out to be 87 thousand dead, 34 thousand missing. 159,000 wounded and another 2,311 captured.

In any known study of Russian losses, there is always an unknown number that no study can cover. For example, Mediaphone and its colleagues study the number of inheritance cases. But there will be inheritance cases only when there are relatives and something to inherit. Or there will be no such cases for foreigners in the Russian Armed Forces. That is, there is always a certain number of Russian casualties that cannot be found using official statistics.

Such documents are not so much interested in specific indicators as in the ratio of losses between different branches of the armed forces, the ratio of killed to wounded, etc.

However, some Russian OSINT researchers decided to pursue every single figure. That's why it was decided to apply Benford's Law and analyze the distribution of individual figures. In other words, every first digit of a statistical indicator should be found with the same probability (11%), but when analyzing statistical series that are found in real life. It turned out that the first digits of different indicators have a different distribution - 30% start with "1", 17% with "2", 12% with "3", and so on. That is, it is more likely that a statistical indicator will start with 1 or 2 than with 8 or 9. This is not a law, but simply an observation, so if a sample is very different from this distribution, then something may be wrong with it. This is used to detect falsified data. Often, they analyze not the first, but the last figure. Or they discard a certain part of the numbers and then the distribution should be uniform, etc. So, Russian researchers rushed to look for falsification in the data from "I Want to Live". At the same time, they rejected part of the data, spent a long time explaining why this was done, compared it to anomalies in the Russian elections, and got a small sample, which resulted in the conclusion that the data was probably falsified.

At every stage of this analysis, you can stop it with a question: who told you that you can use this here?

Too many assumptions, too small a final sample. An attempt to use scientific terms to arrive at a pre-expected result.

The method looks more like an attempt to use at least some kind of psuedo-mathematical approach to somehow prove that Russians have fewer losses.

And here we need to understand the specifics of Russian OSINT researchers. At a decisive moment, they will always make a report that will either whitewash the Russians or overstate their strength/power/capabilities. This is a strange law. Call it "Benford's second law":

When necessary, they will pompously tell you that "not everything is so clear" and "no one blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station" - here we are now analyzing one photo...

Or in the summer, there was a report on the production capacity of Russians for the manufacture of T-90 tanks, which contained a lot of text and assumptions, but for some reason, at the end, the indicators of Russian capabilities were clearly overestimated, and therefore the Russian Armed Forces could still fight for a couple of years. This is then happily picked up by the Western media in the style of "Russians have increased production of T-90 tanks by x*lillion units".
