SBU detains Russian agent preparing breakthrough of Russian subversive reconnaissance groups in Sumy region

The SBU CI detained an agent of Russian military intelligence (better known as GRU), who was preparing a breakthrough of the aggressor country's subversive reconnaissance groups (SRGs) in the direction of Sumy.

According to the case materials, the enemy's accomplice was a former nurse from Sumy region, whom the enemy recruited through Telegram channels.

The main task of the agent was to reconnoiter the border areas of the region: to establish the coordinates where checkpoints and strongholds of the Ukrainian Defense Forces are located.

According to available data, the enemy planned to use this information to prepare "breaches" in the front line. In particular, the Rashists were looking for "weaknesses" and "blind spots" of the Defense Forces in order to get into their rear and gain new positions before the main enemy forces arrived.

As the investigation revealed, the woman equipped a mini-camera on her bicycle to conduct reconnaissance, which she used to travel around the area and covertly record military facilities.

The collected data, in the form of photos and videos with marks of objects on the map, was transmitted to the agent's supervisor via messenger.

The SBU CI exposed the suspect in advance and documented every step of her cooperation with the occupiers. The SBU also took comprehensive measures to secure the locations of the Defense Forces in the area.

At the final stage of the special operation, the agent was detained "red-handed" when she was filming a border bridge for the "passage" of Russian subversive reconnaissance groups.

SBU investigators served her with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).

The offender is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was conducted by the SBU Office in Rivne region under the procedural supervision of the Regional Prosecutor's Office.

According to the case, the official of the Ministry of Defense did not properly verify the validity of these amounts and did not approve the conclusion of the contract with the specialized units of the defense department. This led to budget losses in particularly large amounts.

A forensic economic examination initiated by law enforcement confirmed the facts of embezzlement of defense funds.

The SBU investigators served the former official a notice of suspicion under Part 5 of Art. 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (embezzlement or misappropriation of property through abuse of office committed on a large scale).

The issue of choosing a type of detention is now being decided. The offender faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
