The SBU and the National Police detained the agent and his accomplice in hot pursuit on June 6 this year.

As a result of the crime, the law enforcement officer sustained light injuries and his vehicle was completely destroyed.

The investigation revealed that the convicted agent was a 30-year-old resident of Poltava region, who was recruited by Russia through Telegram channels in search of "easy money."

According to the case file, at the direction of his supervisor, the defendant first established surveillance of the prosecutor and reported on his daily schedule and travel routes. The agent then planted an improvised explosive device (IED) under the prosecutor's car and took photos and videos of the aftermath of the attack.

The court found the agent guilty under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

◾ Art. 258(2) (completed attempt to commit a terrorist act);

Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia to Ukrainian Alexei Berest, who led the hoisting of the banner of the 150th Infantry Division over the Reichstag during the storming of Berlin on May 1, 1945.

🔵 Berest was born in Kharkov province in 1921. He joined the army at the age of 18, participated in the war against Finland and in the ranks of the army met the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. At the storming of the Reichstag Berest hoisted the banner together with the famous soldiers Meliton Kantaria and Mikhail Egorov. However, unlike the two sergeants, Berest did not receive the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, although he was presented to it. Instead, Berest was given the Order of the Red Banner for his flag-raising.

The flag raised by Berest's group over the Reichstag was not the first flag, but it was considered by Soviet historiography to be the only true Victory Banner.

🔵 After the war, on the eve of the gathering of participants of the Reichstag assault and the first anniversary of the victory Berest was accused of having allegedly contracted syphilis and sent to a special hospital. As it follows from the reports of his commanders, this was slander. In 1948 he was dismissed from the army by the "court of honor" allegedly for immoral acts, and in 1953 repressed on false charges of embezzlement, but first amnestied and then rehabilitated.

In 1970 Berest died saving a child from under the wheels of a train. Despite his rehabilitation, his name was rarely mentioned in the official Soviet version of the history of that war.

In 2005, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko recognized Berest's feat and awarded the lieutenant the title of Hero of Ukraine.

In Russia, the Defense Ministry had been demanding recognition for Berest since 1999, but in 2003 a commission under Putin rejected the request to recognize him as a Hero of Russia, as the officer had already been awarded the Order of the Red Banner for raising the flag.

🔵 Berest's group hoisted the banner over the Reichstag on the night of April 30-May 1, and the first to fix the red flag there on the afternoon of April 30 were 19-year-old private Grigory Bulatov from what is now Kursk region and 20-year-old lieutenant Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev from Kazakhstan.

Their feat was not recognized. According to one version, Bulatov was personally denied the award by Joseph Stalin. Instead, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner and, also according to only one version, which historians consider controversial, repressed on a false charge of rape.

In civilian life, Bulatov suffered from alcoholism, and for his attempts to prove his exploits, he was nicknamed "Grishka Reichstag" by his acquaintances. In 1973 Bulatov hanged himself in the toilet of the factory where he worked. Koshkarbayev was recognized as a Hero of Kazakhstan in 1999.

Novaya Gazeta journalists had been seeking to have Bulatov awarded the title of Hero of Russia for several years, but the Defense Ministry refused to grant it. The refusal was motivated in the same way as the refusal to award the title to Berest - his feat had already been recognized with the Order of the Red Banner.
