24 серпня 1991 року було проголошено Незалежність України

Подія відбулася на тлі завершення в Москві недоладного путчу ГКЧП. Історичний шанс було використано. Століття упертої, безупинної, послідовної боротьби мільйонів українців було увінчано перемогою національної ідеї.

То була субота. Чудовий сонячний серпневий день 31 рік тому. Море синьо-жовтих прапорів, транспаранти, написані ще від руки.

«За» проголосували 346 депутатів. Зал вибухнув оплесками.Люди на площі стали на коліна. Священник української православної автокефальної церкви проводив молебень і голос його дрижав від ледве стримуваних сліз.

О 21:00 до залу внесли величезний синьо-жовтий прапор. Депутати біля трибуни співали «Ще не вмерла Україна», майбутній гімн незалежної України, а також «Червону калину» – гімн «Січових стрільців».
