Ukraine's independence did not emerge at the moment of the "Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine" on August 24, 1991. Independence was passed like a torch from the dead to the living, and from the living to the unborn. It was lit in Kyiv in 1918, in Khust in 1939, in Lviv in 1941, and in Kosmach in 1944. Wherever Ukrainians could unite and fight for their rights. For decades, independence was preserved in camps and exile, in emigration and underground, and blood and sweat were shed for it.
