For more than 30 years, he bred bees and had a large apiary. People from Kolychivka and neighboring villages came to him for advice on beekeeping. After his father's death, his son, also Mykola, took over the apiary.
"I was taking my mother and children out of Kolychivka, but my father refused to go. I learned about what happened from people. My father tried to save some things from the house because the neighboring one was burning. There was a shelling and he was killed by the debris. About a year before, in the spring, he asked me to take a picture of him near an apple tree that bloomed profusely in our yard. It was an unusual request from him. It was as if he felt he was going to die," said the victim's son.
Mykola Kotlyar's body was found by a fellow villager. He dug it up in the garden near the house. The man was reburied at the local cemetery on April 16, 2022.
Mykola is survived by his wife, two children, and three grandchildren.

Після загибелі батька пасікою опікується його син – також Микола.
«Я вивозив маму та дітей із Количівки, а батько відмовився їхати. Про те, що сталося, я дізнався від людей. Тато намагався врятувати деякі речі з хати, бо сусідня горіла. Був обстріл і він загинув від уламків. Десь за рік до того, навесні, він попросив сфотографувати його біля яблуньки, що рясно цвіла у нашому дворі. Це було незвичне прохання від нього. Наче відчував, що помре», – сказав син загиблого.
Тіло Миколи Котляра знайшов односелець. Він прикопав його в саду біля хати. На місцевому кладовищі чоловіка перепоховали 16 квітня 2022.
У Миколи залишилися дружина, двоє дітей та троє онуків.
