CERT-UA specialists found a PPT document "daewdfq342r.ppt" containing a macro and a thumbnail image with the emblem of the Ivan Chernyakhovsky National Defense University of Ukraine.

If the document is opened and the macro is activated, an executable file will be created on the victim's computer, as well as a shortcut file designed to launch the latter. This file is classified as PicassoLoader malware, which is typically used by the UAC-0057 (GhostWriter) group. The program is designed to download an image, decrypt it, and launch the resulting payload.

In the incident under consideration, PicassoLoader will download and run a .NET dropper that will decrypt and run the executable file "PhotoMetadataHandler.dll". The latter, in turn, will decrypt and run the Cobalt Strike Beacon malware on the victim's computer.

CERT-UA also notes that the dates of compilation of the programs and creation (modification) of the PPT document indicate that the attack was initiated no later than June 9, 2023. The malware control servers are located in Russia, but the domain names are "hidden" behind Cloudflare.
