У результаті підриву в дамбі утворилася пробоїна у понад 150 метрів, а потік води, заввишки 30 метрів змивав усе на своєму шляху.
За деякими підрахунками, тоді затопило декілька десятків сіл у Хортинських плавнях, загинули десятки тисяч людей.
