He served as a pastor, collected works of folk art of Hutsul and Pokuttia, urged people to preserve folk traditions, opposed the closure of churches, and befriended churchgoers, writers, and participants in the sectarian movement.

In 1972 he was "met" by a new arrest. In particular, for requesting the protection of the repressed historian Valentin Moroz. A few years later the court sentenced the priest to 7 years' imprisonment and 3 years of exile.

In 1976 he resigned from the Russian Orthodox Church and announced his withdrawal from the ROC and his conversion to the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. He also announced his accession to the Ukrainian Helsinki Group. He was nevertheless returned to Ukraine. In 1993 he was appointed Patriarch of the UOC. Volodymyr delivered numerous sermons and articles on theological, patriotic and state issues and was involved in the development of theological education of the UOC-KP. He was also a member of the UNA-UNSO. Moreover, the best evidence of Volodymyr's high prestige as a priest is his ordination of V'yacheslav Chornovol.

On April 14, 1995, during an evening stroll in the Botanical Garden in Kyiv, the Patriarch's heart stopped beating.

Thousands of people came out to bid farewell to Patriarch Volodymyr on February 18. The authorities offered the place of burial at the Baykoe cemetery. The clergy chose St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv as the place of burial. At one point, the funeral of Patriarch Volodymyr turned into a great beating: the Berkut troops fought back, brutally beating people who wanted to give Vasyl Romaniuk the last shawl. Today in Kiev, the ceremony of honoring our defenders, who were awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, took place. I presented the "Gold Star" medals to our servicemen, as well as to the relatives of those servicemen who were awarded the title of Hero posthumously.

During the war, a total of 157 Ukrainians were awarded the title of Hero on 24 February, including 75 posthumously. State decorations were awarded to over 23,000 of our men and women defenders, over 3,500 posthumously.

➡️ It is time for the democratic world to consolidate all this with appropriate legal instruments. The status of a terrorist state for Russia. A special tribunal for Russian aggression. A special compensation mechanism that hides the money of the terrorist state to those it wanted to destroy. And, of course, new sanctions for terror. New sanctions are needed as soon as possible.
